Diabetes Foot Care

There are several things you can do to keep your feet as healthy as possible:

• Inspect them daily to look for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, temperature change, or any potential nail problems. You can use a magnifying hand mirror to look at the bottom of your feet.
• Bathe your feet in lukewarm, never hot water. Keep them clean by washing them daily. Always be gentle when washing your feet.
• Always wear clean, dry socks. Check with your healthcare provider to see if compression socks may be a good fit for your needs.
• Avoid walking barefoot (indoors and outdoors).
• Most important, do your best to manage and take care of your blood sugars.

There are several ways in which you can care for your feet at home:

1. If you suffer from Athlete's foot, keep your feet clean, dry, and use an antifungal, antiperspirant spray under the direction of your healthcare provider.
2. Walk when possible to keep circulation going and do ankle rolls and stretch legs. Don't cross your legs.
3. Always clip your toenails straight across, leaving your nails a little longer than the tips of your toes to avoid ingrown toenails. File the rough edges with an emery board.
