Diachieve has donated 50,000 glucose tabs to Camp Ho Mita Koda, a summer camp located near Cleveland, Ohio whose mission is to enable children to live well with diabetes through an enjoyable camp experience.
Camp Ho Mita Koda was founded in 1929 by Dr. Henry John, a physician from the Cleveland Clinic, and his wife, Betty. Dr. John was one of the first doctors to be given access to use insulin as a method of treating diabetes. Early in his career, he treated Betty’s younger sister and they both witnessed the miracle that the use of insulin provided to someone with diabetes. Years later, Betty began working at the Cleveland Clinic as a lab technician, and they fell in love. It was then that the dream of creating a place where children with diabetes could learn to deal with and manage their diabetes while also having fun at the same time was born.
Today, Camp Ho Mita Koda hosts more than 200 children with diabetes each summer. Their programs consist of educational classes which further educate the campers about diabetes management and nutrition. The camp also offers a wide range of outdoor and social programs such as hiking, kayaking, swimming, organized team sports and much more.
The camp’s staff is led by a Pediatric Endocrinologist who oversees the treatment of each camper. A team of nurses reside at the camp and a RN and doctor are always on duty in case of emergency. Dietitians, dietetic technicians, and dietetic interns from Diabetes Partnership of Cleveland and other institutions around Northeast Ohio complete the medical staff.
“Camp Ho Mita Koda means so much to the families who attend camp and we are very grateful for the support from Diachieve. This generous donation will help enable us to provide a fun and safe environment for children where they will not have to worry about their diabetes,” said Tina Milano, Interim President and CEO.
Registration for the 2012 summer session at Camp Ho Mita Koda begins on June 16. For more information about the camp’s 2012 summer schedule visit http://www.camphomitakoda.org.
