American Diabetes Wholesale recently had the chance to interview fitness expert and wellness coach Shea Vaughn. Vaughn’s new book titled ‘Breakthrough – The 5 Living Principles to Defeat Stress, Look Great and Find Total Well-Being’ was written to inspire women to transform their lives into healthier ones. Vaughn has taken her 25 years of experience as a fitness trainer as well as personal experiences to build a blueprint for women over 45 to lead stronger, happier, healthier, and more complete lives. Here is our interview with Ms. Vaughn:
- What inspired you to write the book ‘Breakthrough: The 5 Living Principles to Defeat Stress, Look Great, and Find Total Well-Being’?
- “Breakthrough” is really the story of SheaNetics® which was inspired by real life personal and student experiences. Watching my students embrace The 5 Living Principles and transform their lives to a healthier and sustainable lifestyle was my gift. Each time they walked out of class they were less stressed, they felt great and looked great; they continued to make better choices and set better examples for themselves and for others. Touching hearts and making a difference encouraged me to want to share my Breakthrough’s with a greater audience.
- I hope this book will wake up your heart. My wish is to encourage you to look inside yourself and admit the things you need to do to inspire your breakthroughs and attain the physical health and the emotional peace of mind you are looking for. “Breakthrough” invites you to find the clarity, balance and fulfillment that await you – to live without fear and regret the life you deserve. A new beginning is just a breakthrough away!
- You work with people of all ages regarding their physical fitness and overall wellness. Regardless of age, what is the one thing that you recommend to anyone that wants to achieve better health?
- Age really is a number to me. At all times in our lives we want to feel and look great, have more energy, and live life to the fullest. If you want to achieve better health regardless of age, I advise you to take charge of your life. You must become the CEO of your mind, body and heart, and the choices you make along your pathway to well-being will determine the outcome of your health. I recommend this formula: “Embrace It” (Commitment Yourself), “Own It” (Take Responsibility) and “Live It” (Enjoy Your Life).
- From your experience, what is the most common excuse people give for not injecting some element of exercise into their daily lives and how do you recommend that they overcome it?
- The # 1 most common excuse people give me for not exercising is, “I don’t have the time.” I believe the more they say this to themselves the more it becomes a reality. I suggest they Change The Tape. They need to say, “I may not have time right now but I will make time later in the day”. Plan to take at least 20 to 30 minutes at least 3 to 4 times a week and you won’t believe how much better you feel, how much more energy you have; and the health benefits you gain will be obvious to you and well worth the effort.
- And for those that lead busy lives, it can be a challenge to squeeze 30 minutes of exercise into the day. What are two quick and easy things that can be done while at work or school that will help keep the blood pumping and circulating?
- Take 5 to 10 minutes to take a walk. Make it part of your lunch hour.
- While sitting in your chair take 5 deep breaths, breathing in deeply through your nose and exhaling slowly through you mouth. This will help to relax you and take a break from stress as you focus on your breathing.
- Stress plays a role in everyone’s lives, but there are things that can be done to relieve it. What do you find works the best for stress relief?
- A little meditation can help give stress a break. This is actually really easy. Meditation is really just “directed focus”. Anything that helps you focus on something other then what is causing you stress. This is meditation. Meaning you are consciously directing your mind and body to something that is pleasing and makes you feel better. This is so helpful even if it is only for a short period of time.
- Here are “5 Anytime-Anywhere Tips To Give Stress A Break”:
- Breathe: deeply and exhale slowly several times to exercise your air passages and help improve physical and mental energy. It promotes relaxation, reduces agitation, dispels muscular tension and directs your energy to a more positive place.
- Choose your music: Brainwaves resonate in sync with a strong beat to increase concentration and alertness – perfect if you have a day of multi-tasking. On the flipside, a slower beat promotes a calm, meditative state and can slow your breath and heart rate.
- Try a full-body laugh: We are made to connect with each other through laughter. Lift yourself up with a chuckle – improve your mood and interact more meaningfully with others. It’s also a light form of exercise; clears breathing passages and fills the lungs and body with oxygen.
- Exercise: Dress for the weather and go for a walk outside. Get some fresh air, take in the sights and be in the world around you. Go with a friend and have a chat or by yourself letting your thoughts wander and just be in the moment.
- Have some fun: Everyone has one activity they love to do. These are the experiences that help bring meaning and cherished memories to your life. Make a commitment to yourself, plan and make sure you do that one thing.
